Filmfestival Münster 2025

Overview

From 19 -28 September 2025 the Filmfestival Münster takes place for the 21st time. Three competitions in the feature and short film sections, carefully selected side programs, media art exhibitions, as well as film workshops for children and young adolescents are part of the program. The oldest competitive festival in Westphalia, presented by the Filmwerkstatt Münster since 1981, has become firmly established within the festival scene over the last 44 years. Because of the warm and personal atmosphere and the closeness between filmmakers and the enthusiastic audience, it is held in high esteem. Special attention is turned to young talents – numerous filmmakers presented their early works at the Filmfestival Münster or won awards for the first time in their career here. In the European First Feature Film Competition, eight feature film debuts compete for the award for best directing (endowed with 5,000 Euro) which is awarded by an international jury. The traditional Short Film Competition has ever since the first festival addressed filmmakers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Nowadays it is also open for films from all over Europe. The section Focus NL features contemporary films from the Netherlands and is unique in all of Germany.

It was an absolute honor to be part of the Filmfestival Münster short film programme with our short film "Smalltown Miss"! The communication was smooth and friendly, the atmosphere of the venue was cozy, all the people involved were really kind and joyful! Watching other short films were really cool too! I had an amazing time at the Münster Film Festival! It’s always an honor to have your film screened at a festival, and this one was no exception. After the screening, the moderator did a great job, and the audience asked thoughtful and engaging questions. Communication with the festival team was excellent as well. Thank you for the selection, and hopefully see you again next time!
